Friends Like These

At some of the darkest moments in my life, some people I thought of as friends deserted me—some because they cared about me and it hurt them to see me in pain; others because I reminded them of their own vulnerability, and that was more than they could handle. But real friends overcame their discomfort and came to sit with me. If they had not words to make me feel better, they sat in silence {much better than saying, ‘You’ll get over it,’ or ‘It’s not so bad; others have it worse’} and I loved them for it.”
~Harold Kushner, Living a Life that Matters

This beautiful soul stopped by today with three homemade meals. Just in the nick of time. An hour and a half through the snow… each way. Giving up her free day and precious time with her fiancé. She came to see me. We simply talked. My heart needed some girlfriend time.

As with many of my friends, she has walked beside me lately.

As with several of my friends, she and I have made it through thick and thin. Today was thick. But in-the-thick-of-it doesn’t scare her, even when it’s someone else’s thick-of-it.

In return for the paper-bag-full of meals, I gave her 3,000 photos. Good thing she has had a long engagement {and plenty of patience and grace}, because it took me far too long to get her engagement photos to her… from the day I shot them until this one. This is an embarrassment on my part. But it shows how truly complicated life can sometimes be. And all the more our need… for friends like these.

{Please, know today just how much of a help you can be to someone who needs it, even if it feels you might not be helping. Ask them… they will tell you. It is.}

Thank you, sweet H., for today.
